Airplanes!

We have started a new project on airplanes! The children sat around the reading area with Ms.Sahira and had a conversation about airplanes. Ereeni told us airplanes fly in the sky and they have really big wings. They land and move with their wheels.
We started off by watching a video on them so we could learn some cool facts!
1.Helmets-We talked about how they are worn on the head.
 2. Different parts of a plane-We learned about the different parts of the plane on the outside. The wings, windows and the doors to open and go inside the plane.  After watching a video and talking about what we saw in it we went back in our classroom and started creating our very own airplanes out of legos and some of us drew them!

After building an airplane out of legos, one of our students decided he wanted to build his very own airplane out of different materials he had in his classroom! First he used a cardboard roll he got off of a paper roll for the body...than he used the cardboard rolls off of the tape for his wheels! :o)

He than cut out little pieces of paper for the windows and glued them on very carefully.

He he wanted to use different strips of colored paper and glitter to make his airplane look awesome! While he was doing this hard work, two of his classmates were watching and really wanted to join in on this fun! They asked if they could help and he agreed!

The girls were a very big help! ;-)
The students were very excited with their big airplane they created! They even started practicing how to write the word "Airplane" Come check out the awesome work that is going on in our classroom!

Our Very Own Vegetable Dish!

Our children in this classroom really do love food and learning about it! They can't get enough of it! They started to play in the kitchen area, where they enjoyed putting the food in and out of the oven. They started acting like their was a fire!
We had a conversation about the different kinds of food in the class room and what they thought it was.
A few examples were: A bell pepper was an apple.
Garlic was Hamburger Sauce and an Onion was a cheese/Potato.

We put the trays into the oven for baking.

We learned how pans go on the stove for cooking!
We already have an expert chef in the building!

We than put the real vegetables in the kitchen area to see what the children would do with it.

Young children are sensory learners: They use all their senses to explore the world.

The children began to use their senses.
The children touched, tasted and smelled all the vegetables.

We were very excited to learn how to use each vegetable. First we peeled the garlic...

This was our very own dish we created, so we wanted to add salt :-)
                                                             and LOTS OF PEPPER!!!!!

Is it time to try it now?!!!!!?!! =)
Mmmmmmhhh Yum!!

Cooking can give children a deep sense of satisfaction and build their self-confidence. It can help them grow in the following ways:
1. Learn about nutrition and increase their willingness to try a new food

2. Develop valuable self-help skills and increase independence
3. Develop math concepts through counting, measuring, timing, and ordering events
4. Work cooperatively with others
5. Develop reading skills, recognizing symbols and words
6. Learn to follow directions and complete all the steps necessary to finish a task
7. Explore the world’s foods and learn about the customs of people from around the world
8. Learn science concepts: temperature, volume, how something can change when it is heated, etc.
9. Improve fine motor control through using hand muscles
10. Express themselves creatively.

Tomato Hornworm

While we were outside having a great time, we found these HUGE green caterpillars in our garden! We have been in amazement with them ever since. We have watched them eat green leaves they love to munch on. This inspired us to start a project on caterpillars!
Look at that!

The caterpillar is often referred to as the tomato hornworm.
They blend in with the leaf so well!
We wanted to make the exact same caterpillar we saw in the garden, so we used a long sheet of white paper to make our caterpillar...

Making sure to cut the newspaper in all the right sizes...
We used newspaper strips to show the patterns on the caterpillar...
We did a great job drawing out the rest of his body!

I think I'm going to need more srtips than this!

We wanted to make sure we put all the pieces in the right spot!

Natalia  did a great job making his eyes in the middle of the paper..she made 2 blue circular eyes!
Next we looked at what letters were in the word "CATERPILLAR" and practiced writing it.

We took our time writing each letter carefully and slowly so it was just right!

Come check out the final piece of our tomato hornworm in our classroom!
